An Open Letter To The World

We do not know who wrote this, but we were asked to publicize it.

An Open Letter To The World

Dear World, I understand that you are upset with us, here in Israel.

Indeed, it appears that you are quite upset, even angry.

Indeed, every few years you seem to become upset by us. Today, it is the "brutal repression of the Palestinians"; yesterday it was Lebanon; before that it was the bombing of the nuclear reactor in Baghdad and the Yom Kippur War and the Sinai campaign. It appears that Jews who triumph and who, therefore, live, upset you most extraordinarily.

Of course, dear world, long before there was an Israel, we the Jewish people - upset you.

We upset the German people who elected Hitler and upset the Austrian people who cheered his entry into Vienna and we upset a whole slew of Slavic nations - Poles, Slovaks, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Russians, Hungarians and Romanians. And we go back a long, long way in the history of world upset.

We upset the Cossacks of Chmielnicki who massacred tens of thousands of us in 1648-49; we upset the Crusaders who, on their way to liberate the Holy Land, were so upset at Jews that they slaughtered untold numbers of us.

For centuries, we upset the Roman Catholic Church that did its best to define our relationship through inquisitions, and we upset the arch-enemy of the church, Martin Luther, who, in his call to burn the synagogues and the Jews within them, showed an admirable Christian ecumenical spirit.

And it is because we became so upset over upsetting you, dear world we decided to leave you - in a manner of speaking - and establish a Jewish state. The reasoning was that living in close contact with you, as resident-strangers in the various countries that comprise you, we upset you, irritate you and disturb you. What better notion, then, than to leave you (and thus love you)- and have you love us and so, we decided to come home - home to the same land we were driven out  1,900 years earlier by a Roman world that, apparently, we also upset.

Alas, dear world, it appears that you are hard to please.

Having left you and your pogroms and inquisitions and crusades and holocausts, having taken our leave of the general world to live alone in our own little state, we continue to upset you. You are upset that we repress the poor Palestinians. You are deeply angered over the fact that we do not give up the lands of 1967, which are clearly the obstacle to peace in the Middle East.

Moscow is upset and Washington is upset. The "radical" Arabs are upset and the gentle Egyptian moderates are upset.

Well, dear world, consider the reaction of a normal Jew from Israel.

In 1920 and 1921 and 1929, there were no territories of 1967 to impede peace between Jews and Arabs. Indeed, there was no Jewish State to upset anybody. Nevertheless, the same oppressed and repressed Palestinians slaughtered tens of Jews in Jerusalem, Jaffa, Safed and Hebron.Indeed, 67 Jews were slaughtered one day in Hebron in  1929.

Dear world, why did the Arabs - the Palestinians - massacre 67 Jews in one day in 1929? Could it have been their anger over Israeli aggression in 1967? And why were 510 Jewish men, women and children slaughtered in Arab riots between 1936-39? Was it because Arabs were upset over 1967?

And when you, dear world, proposed a UN Partition Plan in 1947 that would have created a "Palestinian State" alongside a tiny Israel and the Arabs cried "no" and went to war and killed 6,000 Jews - was that  "upset" caused by the aggression of 1967? And, by the way, dear world, why did we not hear your cry of "upset" then?

The poor Palestinians who today kill Jews with explosives and firebombs and stones are part of the same people who - when they had all the territories they now demand be given to them for their state -attempted to drive the Jewish state into the sea. The same twisted faces, the same hate, the same cry of "itbach-al-yahud" (Massacre the Jew!) that we hear and see today, were seen and heard then. The same people, the same dream - destroy Israel. What they failed to do yesterday, they dream of today, but we should not "repress" them.

Dear world, you stood by during the holocaust and you stood by in 1948 as seven states launched a war that the Arab League proudly compared to the Mongol massacres.

You stood by in 1967 as Nasser, wildly cheered by wild mobs in every Arab capital in the world, vowed to drive the Jews into the sea. And you would stand by tomorrow if Israel were facing extinction.

And since we know that the Arabs-Palestinians dream daily of that extinction, we will do everything possible to remain alive in our own land. If that bothers you, dear world, well - think of how many times in the past you bothered us.

In any event, dear world, if you are bothered by us, here is one Jew in Israel who could not care less.

17 YAKOVIAN FACTS ABOUT ISRAEL

17 Yakovian Facts
You Don’t Have To Be Jewish To Know That....

1. Judaism’s beginnings 5766 years ago were in the region that is known as the present day land of Israel.

2. The term ‘Palestine’ does not refer to a name or a state. Arab refugees from Israel began calling themselves Palestinians in 1967 which was about twenty years after the establishment of the modern day State of Israel.

3. The only Arab rule of the land of Israel (which lasted 22 years) began in 637 when Arab  Muslims conquered the land and the caliph of Jerusalem built a wooden mosque on the site of the Holy Temple. He also confiscated Jewish property which he redistributed to the Arab settlers.

4. For over 3,300 years Jerusalem has been the Jewish capital of Israel. It has never been the capital of any Arab or Muslim existence.

5. There are twenty two Muslim countries, excluding ‘Palestine.’ There is only one Jewish state, which is the 100th smallest country (about the size of New Jersey) with less than 1/10000 of the world’s population.

6. Although Israel transferred most of the West Bank and all of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority and even provided it with arms, Fatah and Hamas still call for the destruction of Israel. And since 1948, more than 21,600 Israelis have lost their lives in war and security related incidents.

7. All Muslim and Christian holy places are respected and protected by Israel, and are accessible to all people. Under Arab rule however, Jewish  holy sites were desecrated and even used as toilets.  Jews were not permitted entry to them.

8. On Yom Kippur 1973,  the holiest day of the Jewish calendar when less than 500 Jewish soldiers were on duty, Israel was attacked by 70,000 Egyptian soldiers and by the Syrian army, as well. Arabs initiated all five wars against Israel and lost each one.

9. U.N. bias against  Israel is evident. Out of 175 U.N. Security Council resolutions until 1990, 97 were against Israel. Out of 690 General Assembly resolutions, 429 were against Israel.

10. There are three separate U.N. entities dedicated to the Palestinian Cause: The Committee to Investigate Israeli practices Affecting the Human rights of the Palestinians and Other Arabs of the Frontal Territories, the General Assembly Committee on the Exercise of the International Rights of the Palestinian People, and the Division for Palestinian Rights.

11. Israel has become the scapegoat for the World Health Organization. At its annual meeting in Geneva in 2005 it passed one resolution against a specific country: Israel for violating Palestinian rights.

12. The U.N. was silent when the Jordanians destroyed 58 synagogues in the old city of Jerusalem. It remained silent when Jordan desecrated the Jewish cemetery on the Mt. of Olives, and when Jordan implemented laws preventing Jews from entering the Temple Mt.  and the Western Wall.

13. In 1987, evidence surfaced regarding Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, previously the head of the United Nations, that he had participated in atrocities against the Jews during WWII, while an officer in the Nazi military.

14. In 1981, Iraq was close to building up a nuclear arms capacity. A nuclear reactor near Baghdad was bombed and destroyed by the Israeli Air Force.

15. According to Bill Gates, Microsoft founder and CEO, “Israel is a major player in the hi-tech world. Hi-tech people are very aware that Israel, compared to its small size, has some amazing technological achievements. There is a greater concentration of talented hi-tech manpower here in comparison to other countries-almost to the extent of Silicon Valley...The level of technological integration in the country is evident. The use of fast speed internet, lap tops and cell phones is advanced here and puts Israel at cutting edge of world technology.”
The cell phone was developed in Israel by Israelis working in the Israel branch of Motorola.  Most of the Windows NT and XP operating systems were developed by Microsoft-Israel.
The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at Intel.  Voice mail technology was developed in Israel and the technology for the AOL Instant Messinger ICQ was developed by four young Israelis.

16. Although Israel is surrounded by enemies bent on its destruction and must spend more per capita on protecting its citizens than any other country, it can proudly boast the following among its scientific and medical accomplishments:
-Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer.
-Givun Imaging of Israel developed the first ingestible video camera that is so small it fits into a pill. It is used to view the small intestine for cancer and digestive disorders.
-Researchers in Israel developed a new device that is synchronized with a camera which helps doctors diagnose the heart’s mechanical operations through a sophisticated system of sensors, while it helps the heart pump blood.
-An Israeli company has developed a simple blood test that helps distinguish between mild and severe cases of Multiple Sclerosis.
-An Israel made device helps restore the use of paralyzed hand. It electrically stimulates the hand muscles, providing hope to millions of stroke sufferers and victims of spinal injuries.
-A new device called the Child Hood has been developed by the Israelis. This innovation replaces the inhalation mask with an improved drug delivery system that provides relief for children with breathing problems.
-Two Israelis received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Their research will lead the way to DNA repair, control of newly produced proteins and immune defense systems.

17. Relative to its population, Israel absorbs more immigrants searching for democracy, religious freedom, economic opportunity and quality of life than any other country in the world.
